Social Issues


Political corruption


The use of powers by government officials for illegitimate private gain. An illegal act by an officeholder constitutes political corruption only if the act is directly related to their official duties, is done under color of law or involves trading in influence.The activities that constitute illegal corruption differ depending on the country or jurisdiction. For instance, some political funding practices that are legal in one place may be illegal in another. In some cases, government officials have broad or ill-defined powers, which make it difficult to distinguish between legal and illegal actions. Worldwide, bribery alone is estimated to involve over 1 trillion US dollars annually.



Environmentalism (environmental rights)


A broad philosophy, ideology, and social movement regarding concerns for environmental protection and improvement of the health of the environment, particularly as the measure for this health seeks to incorporate the concerns of non-human elements. Environmentalism advocates the lawful preservation, restoration and/or improvement of the natural environment, and may be referred to as a movement to control pollution or protect plant and animal diversity.
Affirmative action


Policy of favoring members of a disadvantaged group who currently suffer or historically have suffered from discrimination within a culture. Often, these people are disadvantaged for historical reasons, such as oppression or slavery. Historically and internationally, support for affirmative action has sought to achieve goals such as bridging inequalities in employment and pay, increasing access to education, promoting diversity, and redressing apparent past wrongs, harms, or hindrances. The nature of affirmative action policies varies from region to region.


Racism


A product of the complex interaction in a given society of a race-based worldviews with prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination. Racism can be present in social actions, practices, or political systems that support the expression of prejudice or aversion in discriminatory practices. The ideology underlying racist practices often includes the idea that humans can be subdivided into distinct groups that are different in their social behavior and innate capacities and that can be ranked as inferior or superior. Racist ideology can become manifest in many aspects of social life.


Poverty


It is the state of being extremely poor. It is a general scarcity, dearth or the state of one who lacks a certain amount of material possessions or money.


Church and State


The principle that government must maintain an attitude of neutrality toward religion. Many view separation of church and state as required by the First Amendment. The First Amendment not only allows citizens the freedom to practice any religion of their choice, but also prevents the government from officially recognizing or favoring any religion.


Torture


The act of deliberately inflicting physical or psychological pain on an organism in order to fulfill some desire of the torturer or compel some action from the victim.

World hunger


There are 795 million people undernourished in the world today. That means that 1 in 9 people do not get enough food.


Technology


The application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, like inventing useful things or solving problems.


Gang violence


It means criminal and non political acts of violence committed by a group of people who regularly engage in criminal activity against innocent people.


Global warming


The gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth’s atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by the increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants.


Drug Trafficking


The global illicit trade involving the cultivation, manufacture distribution and sale or substances which are subject to the drug prohibition laws.  


Human Trafficking


the illegal movement of people, typically for the purposes of forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation


Teenagers and alcohol


Underage drinking is a serious public health problem in the United States. Alcohol is the most widely used substance of abuse among America’s youth, and drinking by young people poses enormous health and safety risks.


Censorship


It is to examine something, like a movie or tv show, and to choose to remove or hide parts of something that are considered unacceptable. This happens on TV shows, they will put in a sound (usually a bleep) over the bad word that has been said.


War and Pacifism


War is a state of armed conflict between different nations or states or different groups within a nation or state, usually open and declared armed hostile conflict. On the other hand, pacifism is the belief that any violence, including war, is unjustifiable under any circumstances and that all disputes should be settled by peaceful means.


Invisible Children


They are children from central Africa who have gotten abducted by a brutal warlord and are forced to murder their own families or do other horrible things. He has gotten away with it for almost 30 years and has abducted over 30,000 children.


Animal abuse


The intentional infliction by humans of suffering or harm upon any non-human animal, regardless of whether the act is against the law. The crime of inflicting physical pain, suffering or death on an animal, usually a tame one, beyond necessity for normal discipline. It can include neglect that is so monstrous (withholding food and water) that the animal has suffered, died or been put in imminent danger of death.


Food Justice


Communities exercising their right to grow, sell, and eat healthy food. Healthy food is fresh, nutritious, affordable, culturally-appropriate, and grown locally with care for the well-being of the land, workers, and animals.


Educational system


Generally refers to public schooling, not private schooling, and more commonly to kindergarten through high school programs.


Consumerism


The protection or promotion of the interests of consumers. A modern movement for the protection of the consumer against useless, inferior, or dangerous products, misleading advertising, unfair pricing, etc. The concept that an ever-expanding consumption of goods is advantageous to the economy.The belief that it is good for people to spend a lot of money on goods and services.


Same-sex marriage


Marriage between partners of the same sex (as recognized in some jurisdictions), either as a secular civil ceremony or in a religious setting.



Police and violence


The use of excessive and/or unnecessary force by police when dealing with civilians. Police brutality can be present in a number of ways. The most obvious form of police brutality is a physical form. Police officers can use nerve gas, batons, pepper spray, and guns in order to physically intimidate or even intentionally hurt civilians. Police brutality can also take the form of false arrests, verbal abuse, psychological intimidation, sexual abuse, police corruption, racial profiling, political repression and the improper use of Tasers. Black Lives Matter


Terrorism


The use of violent acts to frighten the people in an area as a way of trying to achieve a political goal. It can only be committed by non-state actors or undercover personnel serving on the behalf of their respective governments.


Pollution


The presence in or introducing into the environment of a substance or thing that has harmful or poisonous effects. The action or process of making land, water, air, etc., dirty and not safe or suitable to use. The act of especially contaminating the soil, water, or the atmosphere by the discharge of harmful substances.

Privacy and the Government


Regulation of statute that protects a person’s right to be left alone, and governs collection, storage, and release of his or her financial, medical, and other personal information.Refers to laws that deal with the regulation of information that can be collected by governments and other public as well as private organizations and its storage and use.


Child abuse


Physical, sexual, or psychological mistreatment or neglect of a child or children, especially by a parent or other caregiver. It may include any act or failure to act by a parent or other caregiver that results in actual or potential harm to a child, and can occur in a child’s home, or in the organizations, schools or communities the child interacts with.




Corporate bailouts


A colloquial term for giving financial support to a company or country which faces serious financial difficulty or bankruptcy. It may also be used to allow a failing entity to fail gracefully without spreading contagion. A bailout can, but does not necessarily, avoid an insolvency process.


Gender discrimination


Discrimination based on a person’s gender or sex, which more often affects girls and women. Because of this discrimination, girls and women do not have the same opportunities as boys and men for education, meaningful careers, political influence, and economic advancement.


LGBTQIA


Abbreviation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender. An umbrella term that is used to refer to the community as a whole.


Religion


Specifically, it is when adherents of different religions are treated unequally, either before the law or in institutional settings such as employment or housing.


Ageism


Prejudice, stereotype, or discrimination based on someone's age. Particularly experienced by seniors or elderly people


Reverse discrimination


the practice or policy of favoring individuals belonging to groups known to have been discriminated against previously.


Welfare


statutory procedure or social effort designed to promote the basic physical and material well-being of people in need. Financial support given to people in need.

Islamophobia
dislike of or prejudice against Islam or Muslims, especially as a political force


Incarceration
The state of being confined in a prison or imprisonment of people


Immigration
The action of coming to live permanently in a foreign country or the place at an airport or country's border where government officials check the documents of people entering that country.


Mental Disorders/Disabilities


Mental illness is a term that describes a broad range of mental and emotional conditions. Mental illness also refers to one portion of the broader ADA term mental impairment, and is different from other covered mental impairments such as mental retardation, organic brain damage, and learning disabilities


Artificial Intelligence


the theory and development of computer systems able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and translation between languages


Media bias


the bias or perceived bias of journalists and news producers within the mass media in the selection of events and stories that are reported and how they are covered
